Original data

Notion sells an AI workspace. AI doesn't recommend it much.

One of five brand teardowns from our audit of household names. Notion scored 41 out of 100, showed up in a third of its own category's answers, and got its site cited zero times.

The short answer

Notion now brands itself as an AI workspace, but when we asked ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini for the best AI workspace, Notion was absent from two-thirds of the answers and notion.com was cited zero times across 36 grounded queries.

0%

Share of Notion's 36 grounded answers that cited notion.com. The engines answered workspace questions with competitors' pages instead.

This is one of five brand teardowns from our audit of household-name brands' AI visibility. We ran our standard audit on notion.com: twelve buyer-intent prompts across ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, each grounded with live web search, for 36 answers total. Then we counted.

Notion's own homepage calls it "the AI workspace that works for you." So the fair test is the question that phrase invites: ask an AI which workspace to use, and see if it says Notion. Mostly, it did not.

On the prompt for the best AI-powered workspace, ChatGPT named ClickUp, Coda, Wrike, and two tools most people have never heard of. Notion was not in the answer, and notion.com was not among the cited sources. On another awareness prompt about AI solutions for productivity and project management, the named tools were Asana, Trello, Monday.com, ClickUp, and Airtable. Notion again absent.

It is not total invisibility. Claude put Notion first on a question about AI-powered documentation and project management, so the model clearly knows what Notion is. The problem is consistency. Notion won when the question was framed around docs, and vanished when it was framed around workspaces or project management, which is most of the category.

What we'd tell Notion to fix

The audit flagged one high-priority fix above all: earn more inbound citations. A 0% citation rate means that even when the engines answered a Notion-shaped question, they leaned on someone else's page to do it. Notion already ships a clean site and an llms.txt, so this is not a plumbing problem. It is a presence problem, the kind you fix with comparison content and third-party mentions rather than a code change. We wrote the general version of that in how to get recommended by ChatGPT.

If Notion, a brand that became a verb, can be absent from two-thirds of its own answers, your smaller brand is not going to coast on name recognition either. Webflow showed the same shape in a different category. You can run a rough version of this test yourself with the free prompt pack generator, or read the full five-brand study for the pattern across all of them.

Questions

Does ChatGPT recommend Notion?

Sometimes, but not reliably. In our test Notion appeared in 12 of 36 grounded answers across three engines, and ChatGPT specifically named it in only 3 of its 12. It shows up more for documentation-framed questions than for general workspace or project-management ones.

Why was notion.com cited 0% of the time?

Grounded engines cite the pages the wider web treats as authoritative on a question, which is often a roundup or comparison article rather than the brand's own marketing page. Notion's site is crawlable and fine technically; what it lacks is the third-party citation presence that gets a domain quoted.

Is a score of 41 bad?

It is low, and it was the lowest of the five household names we audited. It does not mean Notion is a weak product. It means Notion is far less present in AI answers than its market position would suggest, which is a fixable gap rather than a business problem.
